While they’re not all religious, most private K-12 school options in Clark County provide parents an opportunity to give their children an educational experience rooted in faith.
The county’s private education landscape, which teaches thousands, has shifted in recent years with a few school openings and a handful of closings.
The 2011-12 school year was the last for both Vancouver Christian High School and Mountain View Christian School in Ridgefield, which shut its doors after 31 years. Those closings followed the shuttering of the Faith Lutheran School in Vancouver in 2010 and the end of Woodland Christian School in 2009.
U.S. Census Bureau statistics show a slow, but steady, decline in the last decade in K-12 private school enrollment.
In Camas, Spanish-immersion school Spanish with Sarah was certified in 2011. Seton Catholic College Preparatory School opened in 2009, and more than doubled its enrollment, to 82, for the 2010 school year.
With many educational options available, both private and public, families scrutinize their choices before making a decision that will directly influence their child’s futures.
There is flexibility: Athletes who attend private schools where their sport is not offered may compete for a public school.
Private schools need not follow Washington testing guidelines, so parents should ask what assessments the school does administer. They also would be wise to talk to other school parents and to meet the principal, to gain confidence in their final choice.
