BOLTON, England (AP) — American midfielder Stuart Holden played his first league game in nearly two years on Tuesday after coming on as a first-half substitute for Bolton in a 1-0 win over Peterborough in England’s second division.

Holden replaced the injured Mark Davies in the 24th minute, helping Bolton hold on for the win after Craig Dawson scored in the fourth minute. It was Holden’s first league action since injuring his right knee against Manchester United on March 19, 2011.

Holden returned from surgery to play in a League Cup match that September, then had another operation on the same knee eight days later.

He made his return to the field on Jan. 15, when he came on as a substitute during an FA Cup replay against Sunderland, then entered in the 81st minute as Bolton was eliminated by Everton in the fourth round nine days later.
