North Salmon Creek — An ongoing coin-drop drive at Fred Meyer stores brought in more than $18,000 for the Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation. For about 15 years, Fred Meyer has used change dropped into coin boxes at its cash registers to fund donations to charitable groups in western states. From May to November of 2012, customers gave more than $700,000 at stores in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska; $355,000 will go to military programs and $363,000 to cancer-prevention programs.
