SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Jockey Chris Antley, a two-time Kentucky Derby winner whose talents were overshadowed by the drug abuse that killed him, is a finalist for election to the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame.
Other finalists are jockeys Calvin Borel, Garrett Gomez, Craig Perret and Alex Solis, and trainer Gary Jones. Thoroughbreds are Ashado, Housebuster, Invasor, and Lure.
Antley captured the Derby in 1991 with Strike the Gold and again in 1999 with Charismatic, who also won the Preakness that year. The pair came up short in the final jewel in the Triple Crown, finishing third in the Belmont Stakes. In a career that spanned from 1983 to 2000, he won 3,480 races and led the nation with 469 wins in 1985.
He died in December 2000 of a drug overdose.
