Appalachian State beats Samford 70-67 in 2 OTs

BOONE, N.C. (AP) — Jamaal Trice scored 18 points, and Appalachian State came back from an eight-point deficit late in regulation to defeat Samford 70-67 in double overtime Thursday night.

Tevin Baskin scored 10 points, and Michael Obacha and Nathan Healy grabbed eight rebounds each for the Mountaineers (13-15, 9-8 Southern Conference), who have alternated wins and losses for the past seven games. It was their program record fifth overtime game this season.

Appalachian State scored the final eight points of regulation to tie the game 59-59 with Jay Canty making 1 of 2 free throws with 31 seconds left. Raijon Kelly’s jumper had given the Bulldogs a 59-51 advantage at the 4:08 mark.

The first overtime ended 61-61, but Trice hit a 3-pointer 9 seconds into the second, and the Mountaineers held on to win.

Tyler Wood scored 22 points, Tim Williams 12 and Connor Miller 11 for the Bulldogs (11-19, 9-8).
