Talking Points: NFL unemployment

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Just a hunch, but Talking Points imagines that the new year’s resolution lists for certain folks in Kansas City, New York and Arizona will begin with three words: Get a job.

On Monday, the ax came swinging down in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs fired head coach Romeo Crennel, while the Jets parted ways with their general manager and in Arizona both the Cardinals head coach (Ken Whisenhunt) and GM (Rod Graves) had to clean out their offices.

Andy Reid also got caught in the firing wave as the Philadelphia Eagles gave him the boot. However, if indeed “get a job” tops his resolutions, Reid may not have to wait long. According to reports, Cardinals president Michael Bidwell said the team has reached out to Reid as a possible replacement for Whisenhunt.

Among the top sports stories of 2012, the Division I conference conga line stayed in the news.

Big-time schools (Maryland and Rutgers) jumped to different conferences but on Monday, another program decided to sit this dance out and stay home.

Boise State announced that it would remain in the Mountain West Conference, instead of joining the Big East in football as originally predicted. The Bronco blow continues to weaken the Big East that has lost 14 member schools over the past few years.

Finally, if you need inspiration to stop smoking or to shed those extra 15 pounds this new year, just think of the Charlotte Bobcats.

The team that Michael Jordan built had lost an NBA-season worst 18 consecutive games before breaking through on the final day of the year with a 91-81 win over the Chicago Bulls. So if the Bobcats can stop losing before 2013, then why can’t we all do better?
