PORTLAND (AP) — Portland firefighters trying to help a man suffering from a possible drug overdose had to call police for help.

Police say the thrashing 19-year-old bit a firefighter in the leg Wednesday night. Firefighters gained control of the uncooperative man and got him strapped to a gurney and called for police to respond to the scene for assistance.

A 36-year-old man at the residence, identified as Jeremy Michael Coffin, then became verbally abusive toward firefighters and locked the door, refusing to let firefighters leave for a short time.

Officers arrived and arrested Coffin for interfering with a firefighter.

The 19-year-old patient was taken to a Portland hospital for treatment of alcohol poisoning and possible drug overdose.

The case is being reviewed by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for review of possible criminal charges.
