A 30-point first quarter put the Chieftains in control for good quickly.

Rian Bassett had 12 of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter for Columbia River, while Isaiah Smith had eight of his 17 and Devin Bolds scored all eight of his points in the opening period.

“It was a big quarter for us, obviously,” Columbia River coach David Long said. “We were up 20 at the end of the first quarter, which is highly unusual.”

The Chieftains (8-4, 3-0 Class 3A Greater St. Helens League) led 30-10 after the first quarter, 50-20 at halftime and 71-34 going in to the fourth quarter.

Aaron Adams led the Hilanders (6-6, 1-2) with 13 points.

The Chieftains made nine 3-pointers and were 10 of 13 from the free throw line.

Bolds also had five steals and Smith grabbed nine rebounds as Columbia River’s starters went to the bench early with the game in hand.

“We just shot really well,” Long said. “It was a really good shooting night by a lot of different players, even as we subbed. Subs were shooting the ball well. It was our best shooting night of the season.”
