Gibson, Sacred Heart beat St Francis (NY) 66-65

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Shane Gibson scored a game-high 28 points, including the game-clinching free throws, as Sacred Heart beat St. Francis (N.Y.) 66-65 Saturday in a Northeast Conference showdown.

Justin Swidowski added 14 points, and Phil Gaetano chipped in 11 points and nine assists for Sacred Heart (4-9, 2-0).

Following Ben Mockford’s 3-pointer that put the Terriers ahead 65-62 at the 2:37 left to play, Gibson’s layup with 1:09 remaining cut the lead to just one, 65-64.

Fouled by Akeem Johnson with only 5 seconds left to play, Gibson knocked down two free throws to give Sacred Heart the win.

Ahead 33-28 at halftime, St. Francis (5-8, 1-1) pushed the lead to 46-35 on Jalen Cannon’s layup with 16:05 remaining.

Sacred Heart answered with a 12-1 run to tie the game at 47. Swidowski scored 10 points during the stretch, including seven straight.

Cannon led the Terriers with 20 points and 16 rebounds.
