UNC Asheville defeats Liberty 83-69

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Keith Hornsby scored 27 points to lead UNC Asheville past Liberty 83-69 Saturday and snap the Flames’ three-game winning streak in the Big South Conference opener for both teams.

Will Weeks chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs, who have won six of their last seven games after starting the season 1-6. Jeremy Atkinson posted 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists for UNC Asheville (7-8), which scored 38 points in the paint.

John Caleb Sanders led Liberty with 19 points and Tavares Speaks added 15. The Flames (4-11) forced 11 turnovers but scored just four points off those errors.

UNC Asheville led 53-51 with 11:05 left in the second half before using an 18-4 run to jump ahead 71-55 with 3:15 left. Hornsby capped the run with a jumper.

UNC Asheville shot 52.6 percent (30 of 57) from the field in the win.
