Mississippi Valley State beats Alabama A&M 79-68

ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) — Davon Usher scored 23 of his 27 points in the second half as Mississippi Valley State earned its first victory of the season, defeating Alabama A&M 79-68 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Sunday night.

Darius Tomlin added 15 of his 21 points in the second half, when the Delta Devils (1-11, 1-1) shot 57.1 percent (16 of 28) to expand a 25-24 halftime lead and end a three-game winning streak for the Bulldogs (6-8, 2-1).

Usher made 5 of 8 shots in the second half and all 10 of his free-throw attempts, and he scored nine points during an 18-5 run that gave Mississippi Valley State a 56-41 lead with 8:19 remaining.

Alabama A&M cut the margin to six, 60-54, but the Delta Devils reeled off nine straight points in a 1:11 span, including four by Tomlin.

Jeremy Crutcher and Demarquelle Tabb scored 16 points each for the Bulldogs.
