HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — Stevie Mejia scored 17 points, including a game-winning layup with 6 seconds remaining, as Hofstra beat Georgia State 52-50 to snap an eight-game losing streak in its Colonial Athletic Association opener Monday night.

Hofstra (4-10) led 50-46 following Jordan Allen’s jumper with 2:25 left. Georgia State’s Devonta White cut the lead to two with a layup with 2:13 left, and then James Vincent converted a put-back for the Panthers (6-10, 1-2) to tie it 50-all with 17 seconds remaining.

After Mejia’s go-ahead jumper, White missed on a 3-point try with 1 second left, and Allen grabbed the rebound as the buzzer sounded.

Hofstra led 37-25 when Georgia State launched a 13-2 run to pull within 39-38, but didn’t catch Hofstra until Vincent’s layup.

R.J. Hunter led the Panthers with 13 points, but hit just 1 of 8 from 3-point range as Georgia State made only 2 of 20 long-range tries.
