In this Talking Points, the significant others steal the spotlight.

As Alabama trounced Notre Dame on Monday night in the national championship game, an intriguing subplot emerged away from the football field. ESPN showed the family of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, and the cameras focused — and refocused — on his beauty queen girlfriend, Katherine Webb.

Webb received so much attention during the broadcast that she instantly became the most sought-after person on Twitter. Her follower count inflated to more than 100,000, including Miami Heat’s LeBron James who briefly joined the fray before pressing the unfollow button.

Webb can thank play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger for the attention. Musburger gushed over Webb, saying in part: “What a beautiful woman.”

When it comes to reacting to trash talk, New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony should take a cue from Portland Trail Blazers rookie Damian Lillard and tune it out.

Anthony became incensed with Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett as he chirped during a game earlier this week. According to reports, Garnett referenced Anthony’s wife, La La Vasquez.

On Tuesday, local reporters broached the topic of trash talk with several Blazers.

“Some people don’t have a filter; they just feel like they can say whatever,” Lillard said. “Other guys know what not to say. But I don’t trash talk, I don’t even pay attention to it.”
