Norfolk State beats Maryland-Eastern Shore 63-58

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) -- Malcolm Hawkins scored 14 points and Norfolk State overcame a slow start to beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 63-58 Saturday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup.

Pendarvis Williams scored 12 and Marese Phelps finished with 10 points for Norfolk State (8-10, 3-0).

Norfolk State shot just 17.2 percent (5 for 29) in the first half and trailed at halftime 22-15.

The Spartans improved in the second half, shooting 47.1 percent (16 for 34), including 7 of 12 from deep.

Norfolk State started the second half on a 23-10 run to take a 38-32 lead with 11:04 remaining.

After Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-13, 0-2) cut the lead to two, 56-54, with less than 2 minutes to play, the Hawks made just one field goal the rest of the way and the Spartans converted three baskets to seal the victory.

Kevin Mays finished with a double-double, leading the Hawks with 27 points and 10 rebounds.
