Portland defeats Loyola Marymount 68-64

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ryan Nicholas had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Portland over Loyola Marymount 68-64 Saturday night.

Anthony Ireland led Loyola Marymount with 22 points and four rebounds.

Kevin Bailey scored 14 points for Portland, returning to the lineup after surgery on a broken nose. Thomas van der Mars had 11 points, and Derrick Rodgers had 10 points and nine assists for Portland (8-10, 1-2, West Coast).

Loyola Marymount led 31-21 at halftime. Portland shot 54.7 percent from the field for the game, while the Lions shot 37.7 percent. Portland won the boards 43-19, but the Lions did a better job of protecting the ball with only five turnovers. The Lions made 20 points off Portland’s 17 turnovers.

Ireland was 4 of 8 from 3-point range for the Lions (8-9, 1-3). Ashley Hamilton had 17 points, and Bruce English had 11. Alex Osborne and Godwin Okonji had four rebounds apiece.
