Akron beats Ball State 71-64

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Nick Harney scored 15 points to help Akron win its eighth straight, beating Ball State 71-64 Wednesday night in a Mid-American Conference game.

Zeke Marshall scored 13 points and Alex Abreu added 11 for Akron (12-4, 3-0).

Trailing 34-28 at halftime, Ball State (7-8, 1-2) fought back to get within one, 47-46 on Jauwan Scaife’s 3-pointer with 10:48 left to play. That was the closest the Cardinals would get as Abreu answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession.

Ahead 63-57 with under 2 minutes to play, Abreu connected on a 3-pointer to put the Zips ahead 66-57 with just 1:04 remaining.

Akron would make 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

Akron shot 85.2 percent (23 of 27) from the line compared to Ball State’s 64.7 percent (11 of 17).

Majok Majok led Ball State with a career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds.
