College Notebook: Concordia’s Herman making big impact on CCC, NAIA statistics

Concordia University junior Adam Herman tops the Cascade Collegiate Conference and all of NAIA Division II with a scoring average of 24.368 points a game.

The 6-foot-6 forward, a graduate of Prairie High School, then totaled 60 points and 25 rebounds in a pair of double-doubles in Concordia victories Friday over Northwest Christian and Saturday over Corban.

He was a combined 26 of 29 from the free throw line in the two games.

Herman ranks ninth in NAIA-II with 9.632 rebounds a game, ninth in defensive rebounding (6.842 a game), ninth in field goal percentage (.620), 33rd in offensive rebounding (2.788 a game) and 37th in free throw percentage (.800).

Herman is second in the CCC in rebounding and defensive rebounding, third in field goal percentage, fifth in offensive rebounding and fourth in free throw percentage.

The two-time First Team All-CCC selection was second in voting for conference preseason Player of the Year, after averaging 19.6 points and 7.7 rebounds a game last season as a sophomore.

Herman scored at least 20 points in 16 of the Cavaliers’ 19 games this season. the only exceptions were against NAIA Division I Lewis-Clark State (14 points), then-No. 12 Southern Oregon (11 points) and against then-No. 21 Northwest (19 points). He posted double-doubles in eight of the team’s 18 games.

McCartney WAC Gymnast of Week

Sacramento State sophomore Kalliah McCartney of Vancouver was named Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week for Jan. 7-13.

McCartney, a graduate of Battle Ground’s CAM High School who trained with Multnomah Athletic Club of Portland, opened the season Jan. 4 by winning all-around honors at the season-opening NorCal Quad meet hosted Jan. 4 by San Jose State.

She followed that up with the top score in a home dual Friday against Seattle Pacific, garnering the WAC weekly honor.

McCartney totaled 38.825 points at the NorCal meet. A week later, she posted a score of 39.300, placing her seventh on the school’s all-time list.

CCC honors Dixson

Concordia University senior Gabi Dixson was named Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s field Athlete of the Week after posting a pair of NAIA automatic indoor qualifying marks in winning the weight throw and placing second in shot put at the Universit of Washington’s Indoor Preview meet.

Dixson, a homeschool graduate who competed for Battle Ground High School, beat mostly Pacific-12 Conference athletes in winning the weight throw with a throw of 55 feet, 101/2 inches, a mark that also ranks her No. 2 in the NAIA so far this season. Dixson’s throw of 45-5 in the shot put ranks No. 3 on the national performance list.

Dornik, Northwest CCC team of week

The Northwest University men’s basketball team was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Team of the Week for Jan. 7-13 after a road sweep of Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon. Senior forward Ryan Dornik, an Evergreen High School graduate, scored 22 points in the upset at SOU, ranked No. 14. Northwest (17-4, 7-2 CCC) is ranked No. 22.

Gassaway taking redshirt season

Brigham Young gymnast KayCee Gassaway of Vancouver is not competing this season as she recovers from an ankle injury. The CAM High School graduate competed for the Cougars on bars in 11 of 12 meets last season, and once in vault.
