Volunteers and participants of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Vancouver will celebrate the start of their 25th anniversary year with a kick-off rally tonight.

Speakers from the community who have benefited from money raised during Relay For Life will take the stage to talk about how the annual fundraiser helps those affected by cancer.

The 6 p.m. rally will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, 11005 N.E. Highway 99.

Relay for Life of Vancouver will be held July 20 and 21 at Columbia River High School, 800 N.W. 99th St. More than 1,500 people locally have pledged to raise more than $350,000 to fight cancer at this year’s relay, according to a press release.

Nearly 5,100 communities across the country are expected to participate by holding their own relays this year. The original Relay for Life took place in 1985, where one man circled a track for 24 hours, raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society in the process.
