Valparaiso defeats Detroit 89-88

DETROIT (AP) — Kevin Van Wijk scored 31 points to help Valparaiso come from behind and slip by Detroit 89-88 Thursday night.

Nick Minnerath scored 36 points, including four 3-pointers, for Detroit.

Van Wijk was 13 of 15 from the field for the Crusaders (14-5, 4-1 Horizon League). Ryan Broekhoff scored 18 points and had a team-high nine rebounds. Matt Kenney had 12 points. Erik Buggs had six assists.

Detroit led 50-32 at halftime, and led 88-77 at 3:01 in the second half. Detroit did not score again. The Crusaders scored the last 12 points, including two 3-pointers by Kenney.

Minnerath was 12 of 17 from the field for the Titans (11-7, 3-2). Doug Anderson scored 17, and Jason Calliste added 14. Ray McCallum led with eight assists and seven rebounds.

Entering the game, Detroit had won 17-straight at home.
