Shaylan Hawthorne, Columbia River gymnastics
Shaylan Hawthorne of Columbia River was voted The Columbian’s high school athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 7-12 in a vote by fans on Facebook.
Hawthorne collected 47 percent of the 378 votes cast to beat out La Center girls basketball player Katie Whitten, who had 30 percent.
Hawthorne won the vault (9.3) and the floor exercise (9.65) to finish third in the all-around (35.15) to help Columbia River win the team title at the Winterfest Invitational.
The other nominees were Battle Ground boys basketball player Miles Luke, Evergreen boys wrestler Ramon Ortiz and Battle Ground girls wrestler Kassi Strano.
