UNC Asheville holds off Longwood 68-65

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Jeremy Atkinson and Trent Meyer made three free throws in the final 34 seconds to help UNC Asheville hold off Longwood 68-65 in a Big South Conference game on Saturday.

Those were the only points scored in the final 1:42 after Longwood’s Michael Kessens tied the game at 65-all with a free throw.

Atkinson had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Keith Hornsby scored 12 and Will Weeks 10 for the Bulldogs (9-10, 3-2), the two-time defending Big South tournament champions. They have won eight of their past 12 games.

David Robinson scored 20 points, Kessens had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Tristan Carey had 13 points to lead the Lancers (3-16, 0-5), in their first season in the conference.

The Bulldogs’ biggest lead in the second half was five points, the last coming at 62-57 at the 6:08 mark on D.J. Cunningham’s two free throws.
