High Point pulls away from VMI for 96-69 win

HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) — Allan Chaney scored 19 points and John Brown added 17 as High Point cruised to a 96-69 win over Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday night in Big South Conference action, snapping a seven-game losing streak in the series.

The Panthers (9-9, 4-2), who had not beaten the Keydets since March 1, 2008, trailed 18-17 when they launched a 17-2 run to pull away.

High Point led 53-39 at the half and by as many as 35 in the key early matchup in the league’s North Division.

The Panthers dominated inside, outscoring the Keydets 58-28 in the paint.

Chaney was 8 of 13 from the field and Brown 7 of 10 for High Point, which shot 58.6 percent (41 of 70) compared to 43.1 percent for VMI (25 of 58).

Devante Wallace and Corey Law added 11 points apiece for the Panthers.

Stan Okoye’s 13 points led VMI (9-9, 4-2).
