BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (AP) — Police say the brother of former 100-meter world champion Kim Collins has been shot to death by an officer on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts.

St. Kitts and Nevis Police Commissioner Celvin Walwyn said Friday that 40-year-old Winston C. Brown stabbed an officer in the knee, and the officer shot him.

Walwyn says police were called Tuesday morning because Brown was holding his wife and his sister hostage with a knife and an ice pick. Brown released his wife after stabbing and striking her, then lunged at the officer.

The officer has been placed on desk duty pending an investigation, but Walwyn called it a “clear-cut case of self-defense.”

Brown was the older brother of the 36-year-old Collins, though they had different fathers. Collins has represented St. Kitts and Nevis in four Olympics.
