Late basket boosts Radford over Winthrop 58-57

RADFORD, Va. (AP) — R.J. Price made a layup with 52 seconds left to lift Radford to a 58-57 win over Winthrop in a Big South conference matchup on Saturday.

Andre Smith’s 3-pointer at 1:26 had staked Winthrop to a 57-56 advantage.

Javonte Green scored 26 points on 11 on 15 shooting from the field for Radford (10-11, 4-3), Price had 12 points, Rashun Davis 10 and Kyle Noreen contributed eight assists.

Smith scored 15 points for the Eagles (8-11, 2-5), Derrick Henry had 14 and Gideon Gamble 10.

Winthrop held a 49-39 lead with 8:50 to go on Henry’s 3-pointer, but the Highlanders’ Davis made a 3-pointer and Kion Brown a dunk to close to 52-51 with 3:23 remaining. Both baskets came after turnovers by Gamble.

Brown’s layup gave Radford a 56-54 advantage at the 1:49 mark.

Radford leads the all-time series 32-30.
