LORMAN, Miss. (AP) — LeAntwan Luckett scored a career-best 27 points as Alcorn State overcame lackluster shooting to defeat Southern University 61-57 Saturday night in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
Luckett was 9-of-18 shooting, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, to help the Braves (8-16, 6-3) overcome a 36.4-percent (20 of 55) shooting effort. Alcorn State was saved by its 3-point shooting (6 of 13) and Southern’s 33.3-percent (16 of 48) showing from the floor and 54.3-percent (19 of 35) performance at the foul line.
Marquiz Baker added 13 points for the Braves on 3-of-14 shooting.
Derick Beltran led Southern (14-7, 8-1) with 15 points.
Alcorn State dominated on the glass with a 37-21 rebounding advantage.
Southern shot just 23.1 percent (6 of 26) in the first half as the Braves built a 31-23 halftime lead.
The Jaguars pulled within 38-37 on Brandon Moore’s free throw with 14:27 left, but got no closer.
