Letter: Know the meaning of ‘regulated’

The Second Amendment states: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Since so many National Rifle Association spokespeople seem to quote only part of this amendment, let me also quote only part of the amendment, specifically the word “regulated.”

Arms regulation is necessary, legal and appropriate per our U.S. Constitution. I do not see anything in President Obama’s recent 23 executive actions (http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/docs/wh_now_is_the_time_full.pdf) that immediately take guns away from citizens (which so many who oppose him seem to think will happen). In fact, his words specifically state that “Congress must reinstate and strengthen” the existing laws covering weapons.

This approach certainly falls under the concept of “regulation,” which is definitely needed to improve our safety from various “arms” available in today’s society. So let’s all get behind our leader (finally) so we can all live in a safer United States of America.
