HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Gulfstream Park’s first-ever summer thoroughbred racing meet is underway.

Normally a racing destination in the winter months, Gulfstream is adding a season of primarily Saturday and Sunday racing. Track officials say they’re adding the dates to generate growth of the sport and with the hope of trying to reinvigorate racing in Florida.

The meet opened Monday, and will continue on weekends through the start of the traditional meet on Dec. 1. A racing card for July 4 is also planned, as are ones for Labor Day and Veterans Day.

Jockey John Velazquez says he thinks Gulfstream’s plan will “put a good product of racing out for the public.”
