OREGON CITY, Ore. — A Lake Oswego man who attempted to smother his 87-year-old mother with a pillow was sentenced Tuesday in Oregon City to 16 months in prison as part of a plea agreement.

Gilbert Leo Koerger had been charged with attempted murder for the attack last summer at the Lake Oswego home of Annemarie Abraham.

The Oregonian reports she fought back until Koerger stopped.

The 68-year-old engineering consultant with no prior criminal record was convicted of strangulation and fourth-degree assault.

Clackamas County Judge Robert Herndon said family dysfunction boiled over after simmering for years.
