Last year, four Washington schools had firework-related fires, according to state Fire Marshal Charles M. Duffy.

Open play areas and sports fields at schools often have dry vegetation that can easily catch fire during the summer months. If you see someone discharging fireworks on a school property, report it immediately to local authorities.

In Vancouver, Crestline Elementary School was destroyed by a Feb. 3 fire. Witnesses said they had seen children playing with fireworks near the school, although the cause remains officially undetermined.
