Letter: Days paid set by state directives

The Columbian
Published: July 7, 2013, 5:00pm

State Rep. Liz Pike’s, R-Camas, posting telling teachers to pick another profession demonstrates her total lack of understanding regarding the teaching profession. Teachers do not receive paid holidays. They do not receive paid vacations. Teachers work the days set forth by their board of directors in concert with the edicts of the state Legislature. When school is not in session, teachers are laid off. They are, in fact, “unemployed” until the school district calls them back to work. If Pike doesn’t like requests from people who depend on the state government for their compensation then I suggest she pick another profession.
