Clark County will shutter a section of Northeast 99th Street for 55 hours later this month to conduct overlay work.

The closure will take place along Northeast 99th Street between Highway 99 and Northeast Seventh Avenue beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, July 19. The plan is for work to be completed no later than 5 a.m. Monday, July 22.

And while no one likes roadwork blocking their route, the county's plan to conduct one big shutdown is being done in the hopes of getting work done as quickly and efficiently as possible.

"We looked at several different options but concluded that this has the least impact," said Jeff Mize, spokesman for Clark County Public Works. "Do it all at once, get it over and be done with it."

Mark Sonney, owner of Yard 'n Garden Land in Hazel Dell, said the road closure will impact his local business a bit, but he's not fretting.

The local nursery's main entrance is off Northeast 102nd Street, which is connected by Highway 99. But the business utilizes an access road connecting to 99th Street for pickups.

"We do a majority of our business on Saturday, so it might affect us somewhat," Sonney said. "But I think it needs to be done as quickly as possible. And I think what they're doing should work out just fine."

The hope is that businesses along the route will see little impact as alternate routes connect to the locations.

"With a little bit of planning, it should work out fine," Mize said.

Because the offramps at Interstate 5 will also be closed during the road work, the county is telling people to plan ahead and use alternate routes such as Northeast Hazel Dell Avenue or Highway 99.
