Clark County at Work: Bleu Door Bakery

By Mary Ricks, Columbian news assistant

Business name: Bleu Door Bakery

Owner: Bonnie Brasure.

Address: 2413 Main St., Vancouver.

What the business does: The Bleu Door Bakery makes fresh-from-scratch pastries, breads, desserts, sandwiches, espresso drinks and Brasure's "Brownies from Heaven." Brasure also offers catering for all types of events.

Steps to building the business: Brasure believes that by using high-quality products and paying attention to details, she will create products that keep folks coming back. She participates in many community activities, including the Urban Growers Market, that create connections and visibility for her business. Brasure's catering business benefits from positive word-of-mouth advertising from her customers.

Greatest challenge: There is just not enough time in her day to get the work done, Brasure says.

What's ahead in the next six to eight months: Brasure said she is looking for a larger space to move most of her production, which will enable her to have additional space in the bakery. She would like to remodel her existing location in order to offer some indoor seating and be able to display more products.

Owner's business history: Brasure has been in the baking business all her life, but the bakery is her first venture as a business owner.

Year established in Clark County: October 2011.

Employees: Five, plus occasional interns.
