The American Cancer Society celebrates its 100th birthday by honoring cancer survivors at the Relay For Life of Vancouver. More than 100 survivors are expected to attend and participate in the relay festivities, including a catered luncheon from Chuck’s Produce and Street Market.

More than 12 million cancer survivors live in the U.S., and by 2020, it is estimated there will be some 20 million people living with a history of cancer.

The society is celebrating cancer survivors and highlighting its many programs, which are working to create a world with more birthdays. The American Cancer Society provides many free, confidential programs and services to address a range of needs at any stage of a cancer journey. To meet the immediate challenges most cancer patients face, the society offers many programs including Reach to Recovery, which pairs newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with trained survivors who help them cope; and Look Good … Feel Better, which teaches female cancer patients beauty tips to manage the cosmetic side effects of some treatments. Anyone can access these programs by calling 800-227-2345 or visiting http://cancer.org.

“At Relay, we will not only honor and celebrate our local survivors, but the 12 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year, and we promise to keep fighting for every birthday threatened by this disease,” said Emielle Centrella, American Cancer Society Community Relationship Manager. “Relay For Life is a great event that gives community members 24 hours to acknowledge the American Cancer Society, and its important role in helping people get well by easing the burden for cancer patients and their families.”

American Cancer Society staff also note that this August, our community will help the society finish the fight against cancer by participating in a new cancer study, Cancer Prevention Study-3. This is an opportunity for those who have never been diagnosed with cancer to actively get involved in the research our relay efforts help to fund and to help prevent cancer for this and future generations. Enrollment will be Aug. 13-16 at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, PeaceHealth Corporate Center and Hewlett-Packard. For more information or to enroll, visit http://www.cps3vancouver.org.
