LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings has withdrawn from the FIVB Grand Slam at the World Series of Beach Volleyball because of an abdominal strain, but will still compete in the World Series Cup with new partner Whitney Plavlik.

Walsh Jennings said Sunday that the potential of playing several matches in the Grand Slam wouldn’t be wise with her injury, and that having the extra days off to rest will allow her more time to heal. She is resuming her career after having her third child this spring.

She and Plavlik will play their first match next Saturday.

The World Series of Beach Volleyball features the first FIVB-sanctioned Grand Slam tournament in the U.S. since 2003, and will include the inaugural World Series Cup featuring the top U.S. men’s and women’s teams competing against the world.

Plavlik will play in the Grand Slam with Annett Davis, and then team with Walsh Jennings for the World Series Cup.

The seven-day World Series begins Monday in Long Beach.
