Cyclist hurt in freeway crash in satisfactory condition

The Woodland man was cited for unsafe lane travel

A Woodland man injured Sunday while riding a bike on Interstate 5 remains in an area hospital in satisfactory condition.

Gerardus C. van der Salm, 65, was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center after he collided with a pickup on the right shoulder of the interstate two miles south of Woodland.

Van der Salm reportedly veered into the path of a 1999 Dodge Ram that was pulling a boat and trailer. The crash was reported at 12:23 p.m.

Van der Salm was cited for unsafe lane travel by the Washington State Patrol.

According to Washington State Department of Transportation, it is legal to ride a bicycle on Interstate 5 in Clark County in the section north of Interstate 205. It is illegal to ride between I-205 and the Columbia River on I-5.
