CHICAGO (AP) — Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany wants college officials to keep certain priorities in mind while they discuss major changes to the NCAA.
Speaking Wednesday at league media days in Chicago, Delany joined the chorus of major conference commissioners calling for a new model when it comes to the governing body of college athletics. But he says schools must address some “substantive concerns” to make the process worthwhile.
Delany says his top priorities include a lifetime commitment to education, an examination of the time demands placed on athletes, the eligibility structure for at-risk students and an additional grant for full-scholarship athletes — a hot-button issue for mid-major schools.
Delany also says there is “political momentum” for change at the NCAA, and he thinks it could arrive within a year.
