CORVALLIS, Ore. — The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Oregon State University won’t accept horses until next Tuesday due to an outbreak of equine influenza.
Emergencies are an exception, but hospital officials want to prevent the spread of the virus that has infected at least three horses.
The Corvallis Gazette Times reports the contagious respiratory disease is typically not fatal, but is a particular concern to foals and pregnant horses, because it can cause abortion.
The three infected horses have been placed in isolation for treatment. The OSU facility typically treats five to 10 horses at a time.
