Jack Laugher tops 3-meter diving prelims at worlds

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Jack Laugher of Britain led the preliminaries for the men’s 3-meter springboard at the world championships on Thursday.

The 18-year-old Laugher, who finished in 27th place at the 2012 Olympics, topped the field of 46 divers by posting a score of 471.85 points through six dives.

Illya Kvasha of Ukraine, who won silver in the 1-meter springboard on Monday, was second with 457.15.

Others to qualify for the field-of-18 semifinals include Olympic gold medalist Ilia Zakharov of Russia, two-time world champion He Chong of China and 2007 champion Qin Kai, also of China.

China has won five gold medals in six diving events at this year’s world championships.
