NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Council has approved plans for a $500 million expansion of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.

The council voted 47-1 Wednesday to expand the site of the U.S. Open tennis championship.

The plan requires the 46-acre tennis center to annex a 0.68-acre parcel that is now city parkland in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Elected officials and parks advocates negotiated with the U.S. Tennis Association for concessions including more than $10 million for capital projects.

City Council member Julissa Ferreras said the USTA has also agreed to help start a nonprofit entity that will help fund Flushing Meadows. The body would be similar to the Central Park Conservancy.

Ferreras says the deal means that neighborhood residents will all benefit from the tennis center’s expansion.
