BELLINGHAM — A Bellingham man accused of stabbing his father to death and injuring his mother and a niece has been found incompetent to stand trial.

Whatcom County prosecutors dropped murder and assault charges against 35-year-old Per Olaf Johansson until he’s found sane enough to assist in his defense.

The Bellingham Herald reports he’ll be held at Western State Hospital indefinitely.

Johansson had been diagnosed with chronic paranoid schizophrenia but stopped taking his medication before his 69-year-old father, Raymond Edler Johansson, was stabbed more than 30 times in December 2010 and his mother and 13-year-old niece also were attacked.

Court records said Per Johansson heard voices and is delusional.

Criminal charges may be re-filed if he is found competent to stand trial.
