CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Geno Smith arrived for training camp with the rest of the New York Jets, and made it clear that he has set his sights for his career pretty high.

Smith, competing with Mark Sanchez for the starting job, says Thursday that it’s “my goal” to become one of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks. He says he expects to “have a shot” at winning the competition.

Sanchez, coming off a two-season span in which he led the NFL with 52 turnovers, says he’s confident in his abilities and “confident the coaches will make the right decision for the team.”

Smith, a former record-setting quarterback at West Virginia, raised eyebrows when he didn’t attend Sanchez’s annual “Jets West” camp with other teammates in California. But both quarterbacks say it was “no big deal.”
