PORTLAND — The St. Johns Bridge will be closed to vehicles at night for more than a week. The closures began Sunday. Each night, the bridge will close at 9 p.m. and reopen at 5 a.m. The bridge maintenance is scheduled to end on Aug. 18.
The closures will allow crews re-tension the bridge cables.
Don Hamilton, with the Oregon Department of Transportation, said cyclists and pedestrians are to be flagged across during the night closures.
“We’re going to establish a special lane for the bikes and pedestrians, and there will be a flagger to hold them up and let them cross the bridge safely when the work is such that it won’t be a danger to them,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton said alternative routes will be available to vehicles during the time of the closures.
The St. Johns Bridge is 82 years old.
