GOODWOOD, England (AP) — Toronado finally got the better of odds-on favorite Dawn Approach to win the Sussex Stakes by half a length Wednesday in the headline race of this week’s Goodwood Festival.

In what has emerged as British flat-racing’s top rivalry, Dawn Approach kicked for home with two furlongs left but a late surge by jockey Richard Hughes helped 11-4 shot Toronado come through for the victory.

It avenged his defeats to Dawn Approach in the 2,000 Guineas and the St. James’s Palace Stakes at Ascot this year. Dawn Approach’s only loss in his previous nine races came at the English Derby, when he placed last after failing to settle.
