BALTIMORE (AP) — Odds-on favorite Cerro won the $75,000 Canonero II Stakes for 3-year-olds by a head at Pimlico on Saturday. His ownership includes 18-time Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps.
Cerro ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.81 and paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10. He led to the far turn before Dynamic Strike moved to his inside and they battled the rest of the way to the wire.
Dynamic Strike returned $2.80 and $2.10, while Dreaming of Jazz was another 1234 lengths back in third and paid $2.40 to show.
Cerro is owned by Team Valor International, whose partnership includes Phelps and his former coach, Bob Bowman.
