SEATTLE — Seattle police say an officer shot and wounded a man Saturday in the Magnolia neighborhood after several 911 calls saying that he was armed with a knife.

A statement from the department says two officers responded shortly before noon and contacted the man on a street. Police say they called for backup, including a crisis-intervention team, but one officer shot the man in the torso when he advanced at them.

The department says officers immediately began performing first aid on the man and called for medics. The man was alert and conscious when he was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Per department policy, both officers are being placed on paid administrative leave.
