Letter: Evaluate the evils of austerity

The Columbian
Published: June 2, 2013, 5:00pm

Some in this country have been running around like Chicken Little, crying we need austerity, the magic cure all for economic woes. These same people have been sticking their heads in the sand, when others try to speak of the terrible results of austerity. We, the People, must make sacrifices for the good of the country. Sacrifices … let us see if there is a pattern:

  1. Cutting numerous jobs of teachers, firemen, policemen, county and federal workers.

  2. Cuts of federal dollars in all areas that benefit We, the People. Infrastructure for roads, bridges falling apart (e.g. I-5 Skagit River Bridge that collapsed).

  3. Cuts to numerous social programs that are now desperately needed by many, due to the fast cuts in employment. You know, programs like food stamps, free or reduced school meals, and cuts to Head Start/Early Learning.

Those supporting these types of cuts sit back and crow, “We cannot support this type of debt.” I have one question for you all. Is this the type country that you want to turn the USA into, one that has no compassion for its citizens?
