CINCINNATI (AP) — Plate umpire Kerwin Danley left a game between the Colorado Rockies and Cincinnati Reds an inning after he was hit on the facemask by a deflected pitch.

One of Tyler Chatwood’s pitches in the bottom of the first inning Monday landed in the dirt and deflected up to Danley, who was dazed after the ball hit him on the mask. He held his nose and blinked while a trainer attended to him for a couple of minutes.

Danley stayed in the game but left after the bottom of the second. Lance Barksdale, who was at first base, moved behind the plate.

In 2008, Danley was knocked unconscious by a pitch and missed a month. He was hospitalized in 2009 when he was hit in the head by a broken bat.
