Letter: Immigration bill is disastrous

If the proposed immigration bill passes, it will be devastating to America. With the number of dependents that the 11 million illegal aliens who are already here will bring in, the total could soon swell to about 33 million — having lifetime work permits — competing with the 12 million unemployed Americans.

The Heritage Foundation’s new report estimates that amnesty would cost taxpayers $6.3 trillion. We’ve already spent a trillion dollars combating poverty.

Can we taxpayers really afford so many more people going jobless or joining the ranks of the subsidized working poor? Since illegal aliens do not always have to pass background checks, many are members of gangs such as Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), Islamic terrorists or involved with drug cartels.

Moreover, since many of these immigrants are expected to receive far more from Social Security and Medicare than they’ll pay into it, their immigration speeds these programs toward bankruptcy.
