Letter: Move forward with bridge project

The Columbian
Published: June 5, 2013, 5:00pm

David Madore and Tom Mielke — what’s with these county commissioners’ determined opposition to light rail on the new I-5 bridge over the Columbia River? If/when that bridge collapses, it’s beyond imagination to think of the number of people that will die and how many vehicles will fall into the river.

The Columbia River Crossing project is assured of receiving federal funding as long as light rail is included. If the “king and his fool” keep messing around with it, we’ll lose the federal funding.

I think paying a toll either coming or going, as is done on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, would be a reasonable way to help pay for the new bridge. Tolling both I-5 and I-205 makes sense.

Workers coming into Vancouver or going to Portland for their jobs could be offered a discounted monthly pass.

I urge readers to go back and read the March 17 local view, “Separating CRC Fact from Fiction,” by state Sen. Annette Cleveland, D-Vancouver.
