A youth was taken into custody and Discovery Middle School was briefly put on a modified lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a visiting parent reported seeing a youth holding what appeared to be a gun.

The parent notified the school resource officer of the incident, which involved a group of five youths outside the school, at 2:23 p.m., said Kris Sork, Vancouver Public Schools spokeswoman.

The officer notified school officials, who put the school on a precautionary lockdown that lasted 12 minutes, Sork said. She explained that a modified lockdown means the school locked the external doors but as classes proceeded as usual.

Vancouver police quickly responded and learned the gun was an airsoft gun, said Kim Kapp, spokesman for the police department. There was no threat to the public.

Kapp said one of the youths was a former student.
